Our Congregation & History
|
Amoskeag Presbyterian Church is an unusually mature and enthusiastic group of God’s people. The Lord has been blessing us in some remarkable ways. Each member of our growing congregation is using the gifts given by the ascended Lord. We have purchased and are restoring our historic building. We moved from mission status to become a particular congregation in our presbytery on June 3, 2000. There is a wonderful diversity of ages, backgrounds and national origins. We also like to think that the original Scottish congregation which built this building in 1892 would be thrilled to know that once again the historic Christian faith of the Reformation is being preached from the pulpit and believed by the church. Above all our desire is to see Jesus Christ glorified in the worship and service of His people. Our name "Amoskeag" was chosen because of its unique regional character. We are committed to building the church here in the Manchester area. Ever since John Eliot, founder of Dartmouth College and "Apostle to the Indians," preached to the Penacook Indians in 1651, Reformation truth took deep root in our soil. Biblical Presbyterianism was once a strong force in the Merrimack Valley. The area was largely settled by immigrants of Scotch-Irish descent who brought their Presbyterian-Calvinistic beliefs with them. Along with the many Congregational churches in the region the faith summarized in The Westminster Confession had a powerful influence. In the nineteenth century Liberalism and Unitarianism weakened the foundations of Trinitarian orthodoxy and opened the floodgates to the secularism of modernity that now dominates our culture. Now at the dawn of a new century in a rejuvenated Manchester we hope to help renew the witness of Christ’s church. It is believed that the Indian word "Amoskeag" means "one takes small fish." Jesus said to his disciples, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19). It is our intention to build on the heritage of our forefathers by spreading the gospel to a fallen and lost world. Just as the early settlers caught fish at the Amoskeag Falls so we wish to catch people for Christ in order that they may be nourished on his life-giving Word. We hope you will join us in this noble endeavor. It is a cause with eternal consequences. On September 12, 1996 Pastor Reynolds began organizing the church with a Bible study at the Manchester Public Library. Our first evening worship service, as a mission work, was held on January 5, 1997, in our present building, which was owned by Westminster Presbyterian Church. Our first morning worship service was held on November 2, 1997. On April 24, 1998 we purchased our present building. We cordially invite you to join us in worshipping and serving the Lord Jesus Christ. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have. |
